ASM, ACerS, AIST and TMS (with additional programming by AWS) joined forces to create Materials Science & Technology, the largest-ever technical gathering covering all aspects of research and applications of metals, alloys, ceramics and the processes that make their use possible. Rich program, special events deliver at MS&T A program notable for the depth and breadth of its coverage of materials technology delivered useful knowledge to attendees at the first ever MS&T/HTS conference, and the many special events at the exhibit demonstrated the vibrant state of the industry. The show floor was churning with activity as the Materials Camp students enthusiastically tackled problems in materials science, attendees attempted to toss footballs through a target not much bigger than the football, and teams at Fast Track presentations provided practical solutions to everyday problems.
The conference Plenary speaker was Markos Tambakeras, President and CEO of Kennametal Corporation. If you think that the major problems facing American manufacturing are high energy costs and expensive health care, think again. The real challenge is the dwindling pool of engineers at a time when the survival of manufacturing in America depends on engineering innovation. While China graduates more than 200,000 engineers per year, only 73,000 engineers graduated from American universities in 2004, and this number continues to decline. Mr. Tambakeras suggested possible solutions to this “quiet crisis,” but there are no quick fixes. Never heard of Materials Informatics? Speakers at this Monday keynote session set the stage for the many sessions on modeling and computational analysis that will form the basis for materials science in the future. Nanomaterials are real! This was the message delivered at the Nanomaterials keynote session by speakers from such real companies as Alcoa, PPG, Bayer, U.S. Steel, and Seagate Technologies. They described products and programs at their companies that are being used today, not in the distant future. If you missed MS&T…You missed an awesome array of papers that educated and inspired.
